January 2025: Writing in Barbados

Author Jason Betzing Writing in Barbados

Greetings from Barbados!

Hey everyone! Well, after months of planning, it seemed like it would never get here, but we finally arrived in Barbados. I’m still in disbelief that I get to write here. My wife found an incredible spot on the quiet side. It’s perched on a cliff above a lush forest; peaceful with very few interruptions, and only a light house for a neighbor. On writing days, I begin after we have a morning coffee that usually drifts into two or three cups while we talk or just listen to the the ocean pounding the rugged coast below. I get sidetracked by the armies of crested hummingbirds, and the troop of Green Monkeys who routinely come through. Mid day, when the sun’s the hottest, I retreat inside to the air conditioning and take siesta. Just before sunset, the bats begin their flutter, letting me know it’s time to call it a night.

Works in Progress

I’m currently working on my debut horror novel. I ended up going back and restructuring parts of the story and completing an in depth outline and scene list, which has made writing even more enjoyable.
I’m also taking advantage of this brilliant location to research a future novel or two which will be set in the Caribbean. While it’s beautiful, there’s plenty of nightmarish inspiration to find if you know where to look. I’m getting a ton of ideas and taking lots of notes. I’ve also started roughing out some of the cover art. We’ll be returning stateside to Florida briefly before jumping on a plane and heading to Cuba for more family time and writing. Talk to you next month!
